Six important steps to success
- Step 1: Start off by selecting a good bird feeder that is well suited for the bird species you’re feeding and the type of feed you plan to use. Creating a feeding station with more than one type of feeder will attract more birds and more variety. Click here for information on feeders.
- Step 2: Keep your feeding station well stocked. When bird feeders are empty, birds go elsewhere for their nutrition—and will leave your feeding station behind.
- Step 3: Monitor and replenish your bird feeders regularly to keep pace with what birds are eating. This avoids waste from spoilage—and keeps birds coming back for more.
- Step 4: Keep bird feed fresh and free of moisture at all times. Replace any feed that has gotten wet or appears moldy to ensure quality nutrition and healthy feeding for your birds.
- Step 5: Clean bird feeders regularly to prevent mold and mildew from contaminating feed and from discouraging birds from eating at your station. Hot soapy water works best with a soft brush. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry before refilling.
- Step 6: Provide access to fresh, clean water at all times for birds to drink and bathe. During cold periods, break the ice or use a small heater to keep water “open” for your birds to drink.
When should I feed?
Feed year round to ensure a quality source of nutrition that birds can depend on as natural feed supplies fluctuate—and as their own nutrient requirements change. Natural food supplies are lowest in late winter and early spring, which is when birds need it most as preparation for nesting gets underway. Feeding during the winter months will also help birds survive and will encourage species that might otherwise migrate to stay “home” for you to enjoy. Feed amounts may vary, but don’t let your feeders run “dry.”
- Where should I place my feeders?
Position your bird feeders where you will enjoy them most—and where birds are comfortable using them. When starting out, place feeders where birds gather naturally. Then move them gradually to your preferred viewing area once birds have grown accustomed to them. Whenever possible, position feeders near trees, bushes or other structures that offer protection from the prevailing winds, particularly during cold winter months. These natural windbreaks may also provide cover for cats and other predators, so be aware of this potential hazard for feeding birds.
Birds need water too, and they’re attracted to it. Be sure to provide water close to your bird feeding station so birds have access to clean, fresh water year round for drinking and bathing. That means you’ll need to clean your birdbath or waterer regularly. In colder climates, a small water heater will keep water open and free of ice for birds during the critical winter months.
